Cool Hand Luke

Cool Hand Luke was directed by Stuart Rosenburg in 1967. The starred actor in this film was Paul Newman who played the significant role of Luke Jackson. This film has been different from all the rest by many ways. This was the first in color film that we have watched and it was a prison/chain gang type film. The special effect of use of the color red reflected to show the love and negative imitations. The main factor that was reflected upon and definetly focused in upon on the use of the camera was Lukes smile. Lukes smile was reoccuring throughout the film, and showed the viewers that he was a fighter cause no matter what struggle that was thrown at him that he wasnt going to give up on a fight. I thought this film was very entertainging and had high remarks from its viewers. Another factor that was reflected upon in this film was the struggle of jesus christ which was shown through religous icongraphy and religous symbolism. The main strive and huge success factor towards this film was the stragety and picks of chosen actors to make up the roles in this film. The group of guys that were chosen, were greatly close and thrived off each others work efforts.Dragline was one of the characters in this storyline that really got to see who the real Luke was and they made a connection of friendship and trust that was felt through the camera . I think that that this movie could of been better by changing the story line a litte bit. I beleived that by viewing this movie, that Luke was a well respected man who should of been given another chance at life and not received the master punishment that he did. I felt a sudden change in emotion from the viewers as Luke got shot and killed.

Psycho

Psycho was known as the first horror/thriller movies in film making in the early 1960's. This film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and included movie stars, Anthony Perkins and Janet Zeigh. I think a significant factor that made this film a success was the picking of actors and actresses to be used in the film. The decsion of making Anthony Perkins play the part of Norman Bates in the film was remarkable, the use of a young handsome and harmless charming man to suddenly shoke the audience to a sudden twist of a bad guy and killer. The use of Janet Zeigh to play the part of Marian Crane was extra ordinary as well because she fit the part of a young, beautiful,pure and full of innocence woman in perfect condition. I thought that this film was very entertaining and well written for a black and white film. This black and white film was interesting in a way where the viewer wanted to continue to follow the story line and see what event was going to happen next. The use of duality (things meaning more than one thing) was suggested and pronouced throughout the viewers reactions while watching this film. The use of character parallels (mirror image two sides of personality) was greatly enhanced to the role of Norman Bates and this was unpredicted from the audience. The reaction to the split personalities of Norman Bates to his evil mother was high from the writors to viewers. The struggles that Norman had in this film was belevied to be caused from the rough childhood he had, with the death of his father at a young age and the sickness of his mother. I felt that the additional use of attack birds throughtout the film added to the tension and suspense of fear. In alot of ways Norman held the same factor of looking down on his prey( Marion) similar to the sense of a attack bird. Overall, i enjoyed the twist of the story and unpredictional suspense that made the viewers wondering what the outcome will turn out to be.

Casablanca

Casablanca was directed by Micheal Cutiz and produced by Hal Wallis in 1943. This film was taken place in a city known as Morrocco. This film was known to be one of the first incredible romance film of this time period. The film thrived of the romance of Rick Blaine and his love Ilsa. In the film the role of the Vichy government controls the letters of transit and exit visas for the people of casablanca. These two documents were the most sought after objects in casablanca, and held all the value. I thought this film was not greatly produced and well written. I felt that it was a challenge to find the meaning of the storyline and the understandings to follow what was happening and why in the order they were occuring. In the beginning of the film, i had no understanding of who was who and uncertain of what the importance of the the vichy government played in the storyline. The use of special effects were used with something called gauze filming, the use of filters to cameras to make a scene look more softer. The use of lighting on the eyes showed the emotion and love relationship reflect between characters with the thought of each other. The use of light on the eye of Ilsa showed her love towards Rick and that she is lost deep in thought and connection to want to be with him and never loose him. One thing i didnt fully understand was how Ilsa didnt want to, or in any manner end up being married and live life together with the love they shared towards each other deeply. I thought that the ending of the movie could of changed, and Rick and Ilsa's love can be connected and strong enough to make their lives change together with each other. The most famous qoute of this time period of film making was stated in this film. The qoute was from Rick to Ilsa which closed out the movie," heres looking at you kid".

new king kong version

The new version of King Kong came out in 2005. I thought this version King Kong was the better and more full and entertaining one. Even though the storyline of the film was the same, i felt that the emotions and special effects were different in many ways from the original version. In the 2005 release of King Kong the emotions and relationships are greatly expressed and clearly pronounced to the viewers. I beleive that the relationship between Ann and King Kong is more detailed, clear and placed into more depth of focus in this version of the film. This newer version of King Kong is well written and increased in many special effects to show that Kong cares deeply for Ann and that he would risk anything and everything for her. The relationship that was not described in the orginal version that is well defined in the newer version is the caring feelings and love that Ann shares and feels towards Kong. In this film Ann cares about Kong in a greatly deep matter and wanted to risk everything she had to save Kongs life and be with him. She understood the love that he cared for her and that he wasnt out to ever hurt her, he would do anything to save her and make her his own in his heart. The connection that grows between Ann and Kong in this version of King Kong is greatly enhanced by special effects. The creatures, enviroment and sounds are more enhanced and thrilling to the viewers with more detail and elaboration. I thought overall from special effects, animation and moderation to the storyline that is enhanced and proven as nothing ever seen before made this film into an ordinary adventure.

Sound vs. No Sound

The differences between the uses of sound verse no sound in a movie is greatly revealed. Sound and music in a movie plays a major role in how the movie is revealed and accepted to the audience. Sound adds more tension and understanding to the scenes that are being shown. The tension and suspense added to the dramatic effects that are being pronounced throughout the scenes. One of the most important and developing scenes towards this film is the shower scene. For this scene the class viewed it twice, one time without sound and the other with sound. The first time watching the scene without the sound, the dramatized effects and motions weren’t pronounced at clearly and were placed under a hard understanding. The movements and dialogue that was appearing to make the scene was going unclear and unseen. With no sound it was like the story ended and nothing was being pronounced. This in this case was the biggest falter because this scene is when the main character gets stabbed to death and is the turning point in the story. With no sound the effects of montage, art of illusion and camera movements were unrevealed. The audience felt the effect that the story was lost and undefined, with no sound. With sound the story atmosphere and effects were revealed and brought to understanding between the audience and story teller. With the suspense of music increasing higher and higher the attack of the killer was more pronounced and shocking to the audience. The turning point of the story was greatly defined and the effect of sound makes it all possible for the film to be revealed at its best.

We just recently watched the original King Kong that was produced in 1933 in our film study class. This movie was very interesting in ways but in other ways it was not as exciting and entertaining to me. I feel by watching this older film I gained much more understanding and knowledge of how the film industry was worked back in this time in history. I gained a great form of appreciation of the time and effort that it took to make this film. The making of this film was generated and put together by the best of the best in the film industry, these directors did not only appreciate and understand the making of a film but they acted that role into their whole life. The directors of this movie were Merian Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack. These two individuals gave their heart and dedication of everything they had towards the efforts of production and success of this movie. The major and most interesting part of this film that I believe formed and made this movie a success is the use of special effects. The special effect of Kong in this film was 6 18 inch pose able models that were metal skeleton, ball and socket joints, had rubber skin and rabbit fur. This figure of Kong was put together with these special features to make a real like model of this character. I felt the amazement and pride in the accomplishments of these special effects of Kong because it truly made and reflected on the whole movie to time of film history. The establishments of these effects were made possible by the roles acted out of Kong in stages. The role of Kong and the figures that were put together to make this character were acted out in stages in which all the movements were hand made and recorded. This type of action is known as Stop Motion Photography. The film producers made Kong possible by shooting 24 frames per second. Each specific frame was drawn, planned out and then shot individually. This was also referred to as persistence of vision. Another remarkable special effect in this film was the background and scenery of the film. The background of the film scenes consisted of foliage of the jungle and other large figures of the background were all made of metal. An additional and remarkable effect was the model and projection of Anne throughout the movie. The role of Anne was an outstanding and remarkable achievement that was made possible by not only the actress that played Anne but the individuals behind the scenes in the making of the special effects scenes in the this film. Anne was pronounced very clear and her movements were very real while she was being held and cared for by Kong. The close ups and special effects that were very pronounced and clear throughout this film felt like this was happening before your eyes and the suspense was felt deeply. The use of rear projection in this film was shown on an acetate screen with the actor that acts in front of it. The use of rear projection made the viewer focus in on the scenes in which you could see where the frames were pieced together. Overall I felt that this production and efforts to this movie marked an important impact on film making history. At this time of life the audience and workers in the film industry thought there was nothing more remarkable and more achieving. I felt that this movie was a great success during that time period and helped establish a movement of film production that contributed to were the film industry is today.
